Blog 26: Senior Project Reflection

1) I am most proud of completing a presentation that is two hours long because I never thought I would have been able to do that.

2) a. P
    b. P

3) What worked in my senior project was both of my independent components because I applied the information I was learning throughout the year to create a short film for each one.

4) If I could go back in time I would have done everything differently only because I would not have any questions and known exactly what each component required. I could finish everything in one night because I have done it already and it would have a lot of improvements.

5) After my independent components (short films), mentorship (live camera operating), and a lot of research and interviews I learned about the film industry and how it is changing and how I can be a step ahead of another guy because I know what is most important in making an independent short film.

Mentorship

Literal
Interpretive
  • The most important thing I learned from my mentorship at Calvary Chapel Golden Springs in video production is how to compose live footage for an audience. I learned to get a variety of shots of a speaker or band and to also include reactions of the crowd. It is one of the hardest jobs because you never know what is going to happen on stage and you have to have control 3 cameras on stand by.

  • My EQ is "What is most important in making an independent short film?" I am an independent filmmaker and I post my videos online. The videos I like posting most are music videos with a story. I want to film more live concert footage as I will be attending concerts in the future. What my mentorship has taught my is how to well compose a variety of shots of a performance and to include an audience in the shots. The reason it is so important to include the audience in a shot at a live performance is for the viewers at home to feel like they are there. I have learned the best angles that work the importance of keeping the camera steady and will use that technique as I continue to film.

Blog 24: Exit Interview Questions

(1) What is your essential question?  What is the best answer to your question and why?
What is most important in making an independent short film? My best answer to this question is a story. A story is most important in making an independent short film because no matter how colorful exotic a film look because of SFX, all of those SFX will be outdated in two years. The movie Avatar by James Cameron is a perfect example. That movie used advance technology of its time but, there was no story behind it. A film needs a story because that is the whole point of film, to relate to an audience and make them cry or laugh. A video with made with a flip video camera that has a good story will last forever.

(2) What process did you take to arrive at this answer?
I arrived at this answer by making sure I interviewed filmmakers. Many freelance filmmakers can be contacted through social networks. I look at their reels, contacted them and interviewed them. They helped me understand my best answer.

(3) What problems did you face?  How did you resolve them?
Two problems I faced was finding summer mentorship and my iSearch paper. To resolve my mentorship I was insistent in contacting the supervisor of the video department at Calvary Chapel Golden Springs and volunteer there. To resolve my iSearch paper I simply had many people review my papers to make sure I had better revisions.

(4) What are the two most significant sources you used to answer your essential question and why?
My two most significant sources are my 4th interview and the book film making for Teens. The book taught me more of the details that go into making a film. My forth interview gave me my best answer.

(5) What is your product and why?
My product is I am a full time volunteer at CCGS, not only am I a better filmmaker but I am a better independent filmmaker, and I have improved my skills as a facilitator. Everyone played the role of a filmmaker sophomore year when we had to make a Frankenstein film. An independent filmmaker is someone who makes artistic video as a form of creativity and self expression, it is somebody who want to do it and does not have to for a project. For one month each day a made a video. As the month went on I improved my planning, filming, editing, and consistency skills.  I also became a Facilitator or Director/Producer.
The job those roles fall under is leadership. For my first independent component I made a short film with the help of a crew. Everything that I used I brought myself. I gathered friends to help me out with lighting and acting. I made sure they memorized their lines, wore the correct outfit, had stage directions, and that there was continuity. I made sure everyone did what they had to do without wasting time so the film was successfully completed.

Blog 23: 2014 Interview

1.  Who did you interview and what house are they in?

Emily Vysma South House

2.  What ideas do you have for your senior project and why?

I was thinking of going into Arts. I like the cosmetology area because I really find that fascinating because there’s more to it than just putting on makeup, there’s health tips and just the way you’re suppose to do it is fascinating to me.

3.  What do you plan to do for your summer 10 hour mentorship experience?

I’m not really sure yet but I was thinking of getting in touch with people who do make-up and see if I can follow them around while they are on the job.

4.  What do you hope to see or expect to see in watching the 2013 2-hour presentations?

I'm hoping it will help me to focus more on what I want to go into for the project instead of having such a broad topic.

5.  What questions do you have that I can answer about senior year or senior project ?

How broad should you be with the topic you choose?
You’ll probably start very broad but then narrow it down. One student example is someone started with art and narrowed it down to painting.

Blog 21: Independent Component 2

LITERAL
(a) “I, Yesenia Romero, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”
(b) My ROP class and mentor there, Jack has been very helpful in helping me understand video composition.
(c) Digital Spreadsheet
(d) I completed a video that captures all of the events throughout senior year in a montage short film.

INTERPRETIVE
What is most significant about my second independent component is the documentary type feel it had to it. I filmed at all senior events and whenever something interesting happened in class.

All of my hours are logged HERE...
and here are some videos that are in the montage, that were posted throughout the year.

APPLIED

My EQ is "What is most important in creating an independent short film?" This project help me answer that. My first answer a story is most important in a short film. A short film is any video with a story less than 30 minutes. This project is about the year long story of the iPoly Class of 2013.
